The long finish lingers as this extraordinary wine has a really long life ahead of it. Dense dark fruits collide with shades of creosote and dried herbs on the palate. Opus One produces only one wine and a second wine (Overture) – both of which are typically a Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot. The flagship Opus One red wine is a Cabernet-dominant Bordeaux blend, which also contains smaller quantities of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Merlot. At the time Opus One was the first ultra-premium California wine to be sold in France and Internationally. The 2019 Opus One is comprised of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, 6% Petit Verdot, and 2% Malbec.A famed partnership between Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild, Opus One crafted their first vintage in 1979. A delicate dark chocolate bitterness lingers on the finish. The freshness and soft glow of acidity create a subtle tension with dark fruit flavors, savory herbs, espresso, and cocoa. Fantastic length and structure to the wine, with tightness and focus. The purity of fruit is really something else here, with currants and fresh flowers, such as violets and roses. Tasted as a barrel sample, this is a truly magnificent Opus One in the making! This year, with the 2019s, he was still tweaking the blend, but he did mention that this is "pretty close to the final blend." Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2019 Opus One leaps from the glass with notes of Black Forest cake, Morello cherries, mulberries and fresh blackcurrants plus hints of licorice, wilted roses, Sichuan pepper and iron ore.
